ENERGY STAR windows make a difference
June 3, 2015
Spring and summer are the times when we are most likely to take on home renovations. From the small to the large, these projects are always performed on with the intent of creating a better quality of living both in and outside of our homes.
One of the bigger home renovation projects that can be undertaken is window and door replacement. Not something that is done all that often, windows and doors can seem like a hefty initial payout. On deeper investigation, though, they are an extremely worthwhile investment.
Drafty windows and doors are just money pits waiting to happen. They lose heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. When you are running your furnace or air conditioner in a home with drafty, ill-fitting windows, you are throwing away hard-earned cash.
What is the best way to deal with this? Draft blockers along the bottoms of your doors can help, but the best way to deal is by replacing drafty windows with more energy-efficient models. Many windows now come with ENERGY STAR® ratings and can save you a bundle when installed in your home. According to the ENERGY STAR® website, replacing your windows can save you hundreds of dollars a year in energy costs when replacing single-paned glass. It can also protect your valuables: “ENERGY STAR certified windows have coatings that keep out the summer heat and act like sunscreen for your house, protecting your valuables from harmful, fading ultraviolet light without noticeably reducing visible light. These special coatings reduce fading by up to 75 percent.”
Even better, many ENERGY STAR® retrofits on your home are eligible for government-funded incentives, meaning you can get money back on your investment!
If your windows are getting a little worse for wear, it might be worth it to look into some replacements. You won’t regret your choice.
