Should you Run your Air Conditioner 24/7

Should you run your air conditioner all the time?
It’s the height of summer and much of Canada is dealing with extreme heat and water restrictions. Right now, we are all looking for somewhere cool to refresh ourselves. It isn’t uncommon for people to be running their air conditioners at full blast all the time, but the real question is, should you?
The simple answer is no, you should not run your air conditioner 24/7. According to multiple sources, running your unit constantly puts strain on the air conditioner and wastes large amounts of energy. Most environmental groups suggest raising the temperature on your thermostat and adding fans to your home-cooling repertoire. The fans use a lot less energy than your air conditioner and will make your home very comfortable.
A smart thermostat can also be a godsend during these warm summer months. Programming your thermostat to work hardest when you’re home and letting the unit relax while you’re gone can save you both on cooling costs and repairs. As we mentioned before, the11 more your AC runs, the more likely those moving parts are going to wear out.
It is also wise to turn down your air conditioner if you’re leaving for extended periods of time. If you have pets that will be staying home while you’re gone, it is probably wise to have the AC on for their comfort, but it doesn’t have to be blasting.
Remember, your air conditioner is not an all-or-nothing venture. Be smart about its use and you will stay comfortable while saving money.
