Do you have a smart phone?

This may seem like an odd question when you are thinking about home maintenance, but we promise, it isn’t.

With smart technology advancing at staggering speeds, it was only a matter of time before that tech lens was turned on our homes. Over recent years, developers have been working in conjunction with various companies to create apps to make homes more efficient with the use of smart technology.

Companies like Honeywell, Trane, Nest and Ecobee have created electronic thermostats that connect with your home’s wireless network. On its face, that may not seem like a big deal, but that’s not true. By attaching to the internet, your thermostat can upload information about your home to the internet.

Here are three reasons why this technology is awesome to have in your house:

  1. Monitor remotely – Ever find yourself wondering if you turned down your thermostat? Now there’s an app for that! Actually, there are several. Each thermostat company has a custom-designed app to use with in concert with your smart phone. What does this mean for you? Well if you have a nagging feeling that you may have left your heat on when you left the house, all you have to do is turn on your smart phone app and turn down the temperature remotely!
  2. Many of them “learn” on the job – There is nothing better than a hard-working piece of equipment. Many of these new, high-end thermostats are constantly storing and analysing information to help keep you more comfortable while using less energy. It will monitor trends in how you use your thermostat (when you turn it up/down, average temperatures, etc.) and help you adjust your usage.
  3. Save you money – When used properly, these thermostats can save you big bucks. The learning features will keep you comfortable while using less energy and the wireless connection means you can keep your home cozy from anywhere.

So there you have it! Smart thermostats are a bit of an investment initially but they pay of in great dividends.
