I want the lowest long-term furnace cost

The long-term cost combines the upfront cost with the annual maintenance and repair costs over the life of the unit.

The graph below shows that an attractive upfront saving of $600 can actually end up costing you $6000 over the life of the unit.

The graph compares a lower cost, lower quality furnace that is poorly maintained and therefore is less efficient, more repair prone and needs to be replaced after 7 years, to a higher quality, well maintained furnace that lasts 15 years and comes with a 10 year parts and labour warranty.

How to achieve the lowest long-term cost and double the life of your furnace:

  1. Buy a reliable brand – In 2014, readers of a national product testing and research magazine rated American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning’s furnaces as the most reliable brand among leading manufacturers. Their furnaces require up to 11 less repairs over their life compared to other brands, saving up to $3,300. Even if these new furnaces cost a little more, they will be worth it in the long-term.
  2. Use a reputable installer – We have been serving the Tri-City area for over 140 years.
  3. Perform regular maintenance – Our $45 tune up delivers a higher quality of service at half the cost of other companies and includes a no-repair money back promise1.
  4. Get a long warranty that covers Labour and Parts – Most warranties only cover parts and so cost you $200 in labour for a repair that should be covered. We have a 10 year parts and labour warranty.

Take 3 minutes and save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration

We’ve spent over 140 years fixing furnaces that looked like a great deal up front, but quickly went sour. So we put together the following 5 points that will only take 3 minutes to read and will save you from a future of sour experiences.

  1. Buy a reliable brand that breaks down less.

In 2014, readers of a national product testing and research magazine rated American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning’s furnaces as the most reliable brand among leading manufacturers.

If you choose the wrong furnace brand you could end up with as many as 11 extra repairs over its life. At an average cost of $300 per repair, that’s $3,300 in extra furnace repair costs over more reliable brands. And the least reliable brand is actually one of the best selling.

Superior reliability was one of the primary factors, in conjunction with excellent warranty, performance and price competitiveness that led us to choose the American Standard brand for all of our furnaces.

Percentages of furnaces requiring repairs (per brand)

  1. Ignoring small differences in performance can be costly.

A furnace that is a couple of percent less efficient might save you a few hundred dollars up front but it will end up costing you over a hundred dollars a year more in energy resulting in extra costs that are 4 to 5 times what you might have saved up front.

Similarly, the noise levels of two furnaces may look similar, but in actual fact the measurement scale for sound is exponential which means that a furnace rated at 70 dB is actually ten times louder than one rated at 60 dB.

  1. Have it sized by an expert. It’s critical and it’s free.

Undersized equipment will have to work harder than it is supposed to in order to keep your house comfortable, wearing out parts faster. Oversized equipment will only need to run for short periods to get your house comfortable, but this ‘short cycling’ puts just as much stress on parts as being undersized does. The end result is more repairs, more cost.

You should always get a free assessment from an experienced, qualified installer who can accurately assess your needs. Even if you are replacing existing equipment, your old equipment may not have been right and the increased efficiency of today’s equipment may mean you can get away with a smaller unit.

  1. Expert installation saves you up to 50% on repairs, 30% on performance.

Heating and Air Conditioning systems that are installed by general contractors break down 50% more often than systems installed by heating and air conditioning companies and simple install errors can reduce furnace performance by 30%, e.g. incorrect venting, wiring, gas, location and furnace selection.

  1. Check the warranty fine print, they are not all created equal.

Yes, that 10 year warranty sounds impressive, but most warranties only cover parts and not the cost of the labour to diagnose, remove and replace the part. Labour can easily cost you over $200 per repair.

At Hogg Mechanical we include parts and labour in our 10 year warranties because that’s just makes sense to us – you shouldn’t have to pay anything for warrantied repairs.

I would like to thank Hogg for installing our natural gas BBQ line. Greg did a great job and was extremely helpful. Your cost was very good as well. Hogg will be my first call when we need something else.

We were looking to minimize our costs which meant a less efficient unit. However, the gentlemen from Hogg Heating & Air Conditioning showed us with the saveONenergy incentives available and the reduction in operating costs, that we could actually be further ahead in the first year if we bought a high efficiency unit.
